Overall Remit

The Director of Operations and Development is an exciting, critical role in advancing Catapult Design’s mission and impact. This is a full-time position, located at New Lab in Brooklyn, NY or at our southern outpost in Savannah, GA.  In this role, you will have a chance to engage with all aspects of Catapult’s operations, and will be part of our Leadership Team with the CEO, the Director of Programs and Strategy and the Creative Director.

Description

Catapult Design is looking for a Director of Operations and Development to manage and develop its financial and administrative operations, including fundraising, budgeting, people and culture, facilities, and information technology. The person in this role will play a critical role in advancing our mission and increasing the impact of our work.

The Director of Operations and Development will report to the CEO, work closely with the board and in partnership with the Director of Programs and Strategy, and act as the central point of focus for our design work.  Catapult Design  has a full-time staff of 6 and an annual budget of $2.5 million. We work in close partnership with local design firms around the world as well as with a core team in the US.  The person in this role will manage Catapult Design’s  operations and supervise external partners and contractors.

The ideal candidate for this position would be someone with several years of increasingly complex experience in nonprofit development and operations, a desire to work in a collaborative setting with a broad range of partners and a belief in the power of design to effect change.


Specific Responsibilities

The Director of Operations and Development creates and manages all aspects of fundraising and development plans including:

GRANTS AND CONTRACTS

  • Leads key prospecting, cultivation, relationship and donor management in partnership with the CEO and program staff
  • The Director of Operations and Development also oversees staff to ensure proper documentation, tracking and reporting of all new and existing grants and contracts. 

FUNDRAISING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

  • Oversees social media and a newsletter with consultant and Creative Director support
  • Works with board members and staff to engage their networks and resources in events and other business opportunities.
  • Supervises maintenance of Salesforce CRM, including securing additional training and support as needed.
  • Works with the CEO to develop individual donor and business development strategy and implement it with the CEO and board.
  • Maintains relationships with major donors and clients and secures funds for specific initiatives.

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP

  • Works in close partnership with the CEO on all aspects of strategic planning and successful execution of organizational mission
  • Contributes to leadership team decision-making on key issues impacting the organization, and participates in efforts that help Catapult Design to thrive and to actively work towards making our programs and processes more impactful.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Plays lead role in overseeing the organization’s finances with support from outside contractors, including budgeting, audits, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll
  • Develops, manages, and monitors the annual organizational budget; oversees a collaborative process for drafting the  budget with all staff; partners with the CEO on development, final approval, and board submission of the budget
  • Oversees and manages the annual financial audit and all related documentation, with support from our external accountant
  • Supervises the design manager on program expense, invoicing payments, and reconciliations, with bookkeeper support
  • Keeps organization in full compliance with government and funder requirements, including annual audits, grant tracking, insurance coverage, and document retention

BOARD RELATIONS

  • Actively engages a highly collaborative board on a number of topics including fundraising, development, and strategic planning

HUMAN RESOURCES AND VENDOR MANAGEMENT

  • Creates, manages, and oversees Catapult Design’s human resources practices, including personnel policies, benefits administration, and general compliance, with support from external contractors
  • Acts as key liaison with outside support resources such as the Gusto (HR), bookkeeping (Quickbooks), legal counsel, IT consultants, property manager, as well as managing multiple vendor relationships and contracts
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and motivates staff and contractors in accordance with job scope, approved budgets, and organizational policies & values

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages Catapult Design’s physical office facilities in Savannah and ensures we are current with New Lab with support from outside contractors and other staff, including managing supplies, equipment, repairs, and maintenance
  • Identifies, negotiates, and manages relevant vendor contracts and relationships.
  • Delights  in hanging out with small dogs (we have a Chief Cuddle Officer named Beau based in the Savannah studio).
