Evan Thomas

Evan Thomas is the Director of the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering and holds the Mortenson Endowed Chair in Global Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is a tenured Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering and Aerospace Engineering Sciences Departments and serves as affiliate faculty in Environmental and Occupational Health at the Colorado School of Public Health.

Evan’s expertise lies in water and air testing and treatment, with applications ranging from developing communities to operational spacecraft. He is the founder of SweetSense Inc., a USAID- and NSF-supported initiative that develops satellite-connected sensors to monitor drinking water services. Currently, his team monitors water supply for over a million people across East Africa.

Evan holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder, is a registered Professional Engineer, and earned a Master of Public Health from the Oregon Health and Science University. His work bridges engineering, public health, and innovative technology to address critical global challenges.
